The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle:
The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast!
by Dr. Michael Eades and Dr. Mary Dan Eades
Program Summary
The 6-Week Cure is a three-part plan to lose excess visceral fat.
Here are main Goals of the program:
Week 1-2
The first phase of The 6-Week Cure is targeted to cleanse the liver, boost visceral fat release, and restore proper liver function. This is done through restricting calories and carbs while making sure you have adequate intake of protein and saturated fat. Only one solid meal per day is allowed, with three protein shakes.
Hunger is not a part of the program in any phase, so I expect the shakes to be plenty filling. At my weight, I will be taking 3 shakes per day that each contain at least 60g protein, 20g fat and 400 calories. If that wasn’t enough, I’m allowed (according to my body weight) 6-8 oz of meat in my solid meal, which is at least another 47g protein, 22g fat, and 400 calories.
After two weeks of calorie restriction, your metabolic balance should be restored, your insulin levels reduced, and your liver purged of much of its fat. Some report loss of 2-3 or more inches from waist measurements in the first few days!
Week 3-4
The second phase of The 6-Week Cure is targeted to provide enough calories to fuel your metabolic drive, supply plenty of protein to preserve lean tissue and restrict carbs to keep insulin levels low and reverse fat storage signals. Phase two includes more calories, more protein, more fat and more severe carb restriction, while eating a nearly all-meat diet.
Week 5-6
The last two-week phase of The 6-Week Cure is targeted toward healthy habits with a vew to long-term maintenance. Predictable, but critical! The Eades remind us that “Maintenance is a journey, not a destination,” as they encourage the reader to lock in healthful low carb eating patterns. They encourage occasional, very occasional, indulgences and much enjoyment of life. The nutritional plan for phase three looks a lot like normal Low Carbing!
It is my intent only to summarize the basics of the program, not to outline the whole book or to present all the information researched and written by the Eades. Please refer to the book for further details. And, feel free to check out my book review of The 6-Week Cure on Lovin’ It Low Carb Reviews .
My Personal Experience with The 6-Week Cure
In September and October 2009, I followed the first four weeks of the program designed by Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades in their book: The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle
I attempted this targeted weight-loss program when nothing else had been working for a while. At 47 years old, I was in the midst of mid-life hormonal changes, and not even my healthy low-carb diet was enough to cause any weight loss. Sorry men, if that’s TMI (too much information), because I’m talking about menopause. And, YES!! It matters.
Hormones regulate metabolism, including fat storage! Many women cannot lose, and many GAIN, significant weight during menopause. And, it stays that way, until their hormones equalize again.
I regret that I didn’t get a very good “after” picture, so I have to use one taken a few weeks after my four weeks ended. You can sort of tell that my pants and top are a little loose in the second shot below.
This is me, before and after:
