Sugar-Free Margarita Recipe
- 1 single-serving pouch of Baja Bob’s mixer
4 oz cold water
1-1.5 oz tequilla
1 cup of ice
Salt (optional)
The ready-to-use mixers recommend the same recipe, using 1 part tequilla to 3 parts of mixer.
Here in Los Angeles, the ready-to-use variety is availble in many local stores like BevMo and Ralphs. To get the single-serving packets I get them online at CarbSmart.com
So, let’s take a closer look at the instant mixers…
Here is one box of original margarita mix, with 10 single-serving packets:

I poured one packet into an old fashoined glass and added 4 ounces of water. It mixed almost instantly with very little stirring. The flavor before adding alcohol is like tart limeade. Both satisfyingly sweet and lip-puckeringly sour.
It is a little to strong to guzzle full-strength! So, if you are drinking this in virgin drinks, I suggest diluting it to taste, or at least replacing the 1-2 oz of tequilla with more water, soda or whatever you are mixing with. That should make a lovely, refreshing drink.
I didn’t add any tequilla today. I wanted to drink the whole 4 ounces “as is” to see if the sugar-free aftertaste is a problem. I have read that other reviewers don’t like the aftertaste. I knew I wouldn’t be able to taste any after taste through the tequilla (though a few reviewers say they can). To make even it worse, if possible, I drank it at room temperature. I didn’t even add any ice.
I found no unpleasant aftertaste at all.

So, I also tried the Mayan Mango Margarita Mix today. I don’t really drink a lot of alcohol, so I prefer drinks that are good with or without… This one I mixed with 4 oz of refrigerated club soda. Either the Mango flavored one doesn’t mix as well as the original, or it doesn’t mix as well with club soda… but it ended up fine after a little stirring.
Wow! Sweet. Very tart. Really good. (pucker… pucker…) Again, if you’re drinking this without alcohol, add a 1-2 ounces of liquid to dilute it to the same strength you would have if you had added the booze.
I like this product!
In my post about our low-carb cruise in March 2010, I told you that Andrew DiMino, founder and president of CarbSmart.com, brought some samples of Baja Bob’s Sugar-Free Original Margarita Mix on the cruise for us to try. He talked to the bartenders in the bar near our meeting room, and told them how to use the packets to make sugar-free margaritas for us.
So, several of us carried these drink mixers with us to our cocktail party, and to karaoke, and enjoyed a few sugar-free margaritas on our cruise. It was fantastic to enjoy some festive adult beverages without compromising the old blood sugar!!

If you have been missing cocktails on your low-carb diet. Check out Baja Bob’s drink mixers. The ones I’ve tried are very good!

Wow thanks for the food find, I’ll have to see if we have anything like that over here. I’m thirsty after seeing those pics.
I really found them to be great! Either blending it with ice, or adding the alcohol makes it just right. If you’re going to have it without the alcohol, I’d recommend replacing the last 1-2 oz of alcohol with extra water, soda, or whatever. Full strength, it is a little too tart for guzzling.
I don’t have kids, but I would have loved having blended-iced limeade like this when I was a kid. My mom would totally have buzzed a pitcher of these in the blender for my friends and me on a hot afternoon!
