The 2010 Low Carb Cruise has Sailed
Last week, I was on a cruise in the Bahamas.
A Low Carb Cruise.
What is a LOW CARB CRUISE, you might ask?
Well, it was very much like any other cruise, except it was a whole lot more fun.
Why??
Because there were about 100 people there who share my conviction that low carb nutrition promotes optimal health and who have incorporated low carb nutrition into their lifestyles!! Throughout the cruise, we compared notes on our nutritional challenges. We shared our success stories. We heard about the latest low carb news, especially how low carb is taking over Sweden! And we made a lot of new friends.
We were all lovin’ it low carb!!!
I described my expectations in my last post. So, if anybody reading this is wondering… my (high) expectations were far exceeded!!!
We had a group of tables in the dining roon where we got to mix it up a little bit, and meet different people each night. I made so many new friends!!! The chef made a couple of sugar-free desserts especially for us: berry tarts and cheesecake.
On the days we were not in port, our group met together to share and learn about the Low Carb life. We heard presentations from experts in the fields of health, fitness, nutrition, cooking, lifestyle, etc. The presenters were absolutely great!! I learned a lot. And I had fun doing it. A lot of fun!
Check out the special guest speakers who were there:
Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt
general practioner (in Sweden) and low carb blogger (of what might be the most popular low carb blog in the world)
His blog is in Swedish, so it is just a guess that most people reading this will not be able to read it. You can try the Google translation. If you want to read more (in English) about the low carb explosion in Sweden, check out A High-Fat, Low-Carb Diet Explosion Happening In Sweden from Jimmy Moore’s Livin’ La Vida Low Carb Blog.
Dr. William Davis
cardiologist
website: The Heart Scan Blog
Dr. Davis is one of the speakers with which I was unfamiliar prior to the cruise. His presentation was both informative and exciting. He is very passionate about helping people prolong and regain their cardiac health, and he has the diagnostic tools to do just that.
Jaqueline Eberstein, RN
authority on the Atkins diet (worked with Dr. Atkins for 30 years), and co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution*
website: Controlled Carbohydrate Nutrition
Not only did Jackie Eberstein have great experience and information to share with us about controlling carbs, but we have a shared interest in northern Wales!! It was a delight to talk about the history of the British Isles with the Ebersteins.
Dr. Mary Vernon
Dr. Mary Vernon is one of the country’s leading practitioners who use low-carbohydrate nutrition as a means of controlling metabolic health. Her treatment does control weight as well, but that is secondary. A healthy metabolism regulates body weight.
I really liked the way she puts it… something like this: it doesn’t matter so much what you weigh; what matters is what fuel you’re burning. Your body should be burning fat as its primary fuel. If your body is burning sugar as your primary fuel (the typical result of a high-carbohydrate diet), that can cause a host of health problems, like excess fat storage, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, etc. So, while many healthcare practitioners are treating the various symptoms of this broken metabolism, Dr. Vernon is treating the root cause. And she’s doing it very successfully!!
She is a co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution* and a co-founder of Innovative Metabolic Solutions, an exciting new website that is a collaboration of Dr. Mary Vernon, Dr. Eric Westman, and science writer Gary Taubes.
Dr. Vernon shared so much information it could have been dizzying. But at the same time, it was so great to hear of the numerous people that have found such great health outcomes by addressing the excess carbohydrates in their diets. I found her talk very exciting!!
Dana Carpender
author of numerous low-carb cookbooks
website: Hold The Toast
Dana’s latest book is a compilation of 1001 of the best recipes from her previously published cookbooks, and it was released just this month!
Check out all Dana Carpender books at Amazon*
Judy Barnes Baker
author of Carb Wars: Sugar is the New Fat*

Carb Wars Cookbook
Judy was also just a joy to hear, as she told us about some of her current projects. I don’t want to steal her thunder, so you’ll have to read about it in HER BLOG first.
Andrew DiMino
founder and president of CarbSmart.com
Andrew brought some products for us to try… Water bottles, cheese snacks, a variety of snack foods: bars and protein bars, and…
Baja Bob Sugar Free Margarita Mix
Everyone I talked to about the sugar free Margaritas LOVED them! Including ME…
Fred Hahn
author and fitness expert
website: Serious Strength
Fred explained in detail how why his “slow burn” resistance training technique is so beneficial to overall health, and especially for those of us who are struggling to overcome metabolic disorders involving blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity. He demonstrated the “slow burn” technique for us in the ship’s gym.
I already have a copy of this book, but have only skimmed it so far. After seeing a live demonstration, I’m going to read this thoroughly, and buy Fred’s DVD set.
I am definintely going to try this… I just ordered the DVD.
Thank you one and all!!!
I know I’m not the only one who wants to give a big THANK YOU to all our special guests. (But I’m the only one that I have a right to speak for…)
Unlike many conventions or group meetings… or cruises… our special guests came at their own expense. And our group organizers do everything possible to get us the lowest prices for the cruise, and … that is all we pay for!!! The cruise.
THANK YOU one more time, for your generosity to cruise with us, make presentations, answer questions, and hang out with us for five days. I really, really appreciate you all!!
Cruising in 2011…

Ramona, you said it beautifully. The cruise lived up to my every expectation and exceeded most of them. It was an awesome experience and the speakers were fabulous, but just getting to meet so many other folks commited to a LC way of life was wonderful too. Looking forward to 2011 already.
